Power pop is a catch-all term used to describe the music made by any band that
knows a minimum of three chords and plays them loudly through electric
guitars. Because of this, power pop is often frustratingly dim. Lit are the
exception. On A Place in the Sun, Lit sound like Nirvana minus the angst,
replacing it with Cheap Tricks melodic sensibility. Their slice-of-Gen-X-life
lyrics are comprehensible, wryly personal musings of love, lust, alcohol, and
the abuses of each. “My car is in the front yard / And Im sleeping with my
clothes on / Came in through the window last night / And youre gone,”
frontman A. Jay Popoff relates in “My Own Worst Enemy.” Popoff sings in a
from-the-gut, pure rock & roll voice that never needs to scream to be powerful
or emotional. The hooks, played by brother Jeremy Popoff, are bigger than a
cruise-ship anchor. There is absolutely nothing unfamiliar about any of these
songs, but A Place in the Sun is one of the meatiest albums of its ilk,

pop/rock trio Lifehouse stays steady on its adult-alternative course, offering
up a guitar-driven post-grunge set that is ready-made for radio play. While

rock a little harder than its eponymous predecessor, a point hit home by the
brooding opener, “Disarray,” and the driving title track. Those worried that

Lenny kicks off like Saving Private Ryan with a bristling short, sharp attack
of power rock in “Battlefield of Love”. Then Lenny does what Lenny Kravitz
always does and swings us all over the place. “Yesterday Is Gone” is
Definitely Maybe-era Oasis complete with nasal vocal, “God Saves Us All”
sounds like a Slade production, “You Were In My Heart” echoes Massive Attack
and “Bank Robber Man” could be Blondie. Elements of Timbaland style R&B
flicker in and out of “Believe In Me” and “Pay To Play”, but this is perhaps
Kravitzs most retro album to date. Hes such an experienced songwriter and
producer that he can craft well-made tunes with his eyes shut, and there are
good tracks aplenty on Lenny (particularly the hook-laden “God Save Us All”
and the chant-able single “Dig In”). Theres just the nagging feeling that
Kravitz still hasnt found what hes looking for. Hes got the look, hes got
the talent (Kravitz produced the album himself and played most of the
instruments), hes got the $9 million mansion in Miami and the nose ring but
he hasnt got the power to inspire millions in the way a group such as the Red
Hot Chilli Peppers can (which is the sort of territory Kravitz is aiming for).
Only “Stillness of Heart” comes up to this kind of emotional expectation, a
powerful ballad of self-examination that exposes Kravitz for who he is. –Jake

MUSIC FOR PEOPLE is a watery-sounding but oddly effective mix of
post-industrial noise recalling Trent Reznor, Eno-esque ambient music, and
psychedelic pop of both 60s and late 80s shoe-gazer varieties. Head Vast
honcho Jon Crosby is an impressive guitarist. As a singer he essentially has
two vocal styles; depending on the song, its either the sort of operatic lack
of affect that has served as a signifier for artsy angst since David Bowie in
his experimental days, or simply full bore Bono circa “Where the Streets Have
No Name.” The standout track here is “Land of Shame,” which starts out as a
sort of homage to “Sunny Afternoon” period Kinks, before Crosby cranks up the
distorted guitars and processed robotic vocals. Recorded at Palindrome,
Venice, California; Mat Hatter, Sunset Sound, The Hook North and Oceanway,

Although 1988s OU812 was another mega-seller for Van Halen, it turned out to
be a somewhat rushed affair, since the group was under a strict deadline to
finish it in time for the start of the bands summer concert festival,
“Monsters of Rock.” More time was spent on 1991s FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL
KNOWLEDGE, and it shows–its one of the best and most consistent Van Halen
release of the Sammy Hagar era. It also turned out to be the line-ups
heaviest and most rock-oriented release, due in part to the involvement of Led
Zeppelin producer Andy Johns.

The album spawned several popular singles and MTV videos, such as the
album-opening “Poundcake” (which the group performed live on the 1991 MTV
Video Music Awards), and the more pop-oriented tracks “Runaround,” “Top of the
World,” and “Right Now.” Also featured was the Eddie Van Halen solo guitar
piece “316″ (written for his newly-born son, Wolfgang), as well as “Judgement
Day,” “Pleasure Dome,” and “Man on a Mission.” The ensuing tour for the album
eventually resulted in Van Halens first live album, 1993s LIVE: RIGHT HERE,
RIGHT NOW.

Matthew Goods seventh studio release Hospital Music is based on a premise
that no one would wish to be inspired by: Goods overdose, spurred on by a
nasty divorce and his ongoing battles with bipolar disorder. As a result, this
disc is a dark, deeply intimate collection of music from a singer who has
always been clever, but not always this lyrically direct. Sonically, Hospital
Music is equally candid; opening track “Champions of Nothing” is a monolithic
9 and a half minutes of passion and processing in which keen-eared listeners
can hear Good hyperventilating at the songs end. “Shes in It for the Money”
is as direct a journal entry as Good has ever penned, singing “Im in love
with your pills/I tried to get rid of myself” in a voice shaking with passion.
Smatterings of sound bytes throughout the disc–akin to whispers of
madness–keep it hanging in a perpetual state of unsettledness. There are
certainly classic Good tracks, including “99% of Us Is Failure” and “The
Devils in Your Details” while “Born Losers”–the CDs first single–comes
with a surprising country twang. Equally noteworthy is Goods unique choices
of cover tunes: “Moon Over Marin” a gorgeous take on a punk rock classic by
the Dead Kennedys and the closing number “True Love Will Find You in the End”
from Daniel Johnston, a musician who has himself struggled with manic

Sell 10 million copies of your debut album and you might find yourself putting
on a few airs. Evidence that its happened to matchbox twenty can be found in
the new, spelled-out format of their all-lowercased name and the pretentious
insertion of that name into the title of this, their sophomore set. The level
of popularity achieved by their 1996 debut, Yourself or Someone Like You,
posed a more profound problem, though–should they follow in the footsteps of
that smash effort, or strike out in a different direction? To their credit,
the Orlando quintet puts their massive popularity on the line by opting mostly
for the latter course: there are no obvious retreads here of earlier hits such
as “Push,” “3 a.m.,” and “Real World”–or of “Smooth,” the
multiple-Grammy-winning Santana hit penned and sung by matchbox frontman Rob
Thomas. Instead, the album sports a nice mix of material that is catchy, but
may take a little longer to settle into your memory banks, such as the moody
yet intense “Bent,” the horn-driven rocker “Black & White People,” and several
songs examining various aspects of relationships, “If Youre Gone,” “Rest
Stop,” and “Bed of Lies.” Whatever the members of matchbox twenty want to call
themselves, these guys may yet be able to have it all–artistic growth as well
as massive sales. Theyre not headed for Hootieville just yet. –Daniel

The Marvelous 3 is a band with an urbane name and a brand of pop-rock to
match. Lead singer and guitarist Butch Walker often sings suspended notes in a
timbre resonating heavily with nasal Bowie-ness. Drummer Slug and bassist
Jayce follow suit with riffs that stop just short of grungy aggression,
tempered with a polished reserve. Sound like the perfect Brit band? Youd say
yes when you hear how Walker rounds out his words with proper British diction.
But this trio from Atlanta would have you fooled. Maybe theyre poseurs? Who
cares. With lyrics cheekier than Ben Foldss and hooks far more memorable than
Third Eye Blinds or Matchbox 20s, their songs are refreshingly structured
and predictable in a way that is wholeheartedly gratifying. A combination of
90s noisy guitar rock, 80s pacing, and 70s glam, Hey! is unapologetically
