The Denmark trio, who uprooted their lives and relocated to
Williamsburg, returns with their new album, A Bad Girl In Harlem.
The process of writing A Bad Girl In Harlem proved long and
arduous, but ultimately fruitful. The band came out of it with
over 60 demos, many inspired by, lead singer, Davids new single
life. The musicians embraced a greater variety of musical styles,
drawing influence equally from punk rock and pop music. The
recording process coincided with the songwriting, and in fact a
few of the discs final tracks feature the original demo vocals,
which resonate with a more genuine flair than the subsequent
takes.

The songs lyrics, too, were rooted in the musicians shifting
lives and experiences. “Harlem,” the albums first single, was
inspired a fling David had with a girl from Spanish Harlem, an
area he never thought hed visit. The throbbing rock number
captures a boisterous party vibe and marked a turning point in
the bands writing process for A Bad Girl In Harlem.
Additionally, you will likely recognize “Harlem” from the wildly
popular Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco TV commercial.

Five for Fighting is actually just one guy with a rather substantial chip on
his shoulder whos taken his name from the amount of time a hockey player
spends in the penalty box for fighting. Los Angeles native and erstwhile
prodigy John Ondrasik really knows his way around a melody, bolstering it with
a dramatic sense of timing and rhythm like a more modern and hipper Elton
John. And that defiant chip does makes for powerful poetry, although
oftentimes he sacrifices logic and clarity for the sake of iambic pentameter.
While “Superman” is a catchy affair about the restrictions of being superhuman
and the desire to belong (“Im only a man in a silly red sheet looking for
special things inside me”), its doubtful that anyone who ever read a DC comic
would believe that Superman would ever be “digging for kryptonite on this
one-way street,” since a loose fragment from Supermans home planet might turn
him into a blubbering infant or a giant ant. At best, Five for Fighting
follows in the narrative-based path paved by Counting Crows. –Jaan Uhelszki

Math wiz and multi-instrumentalist John Ondrasiks third album under his
rather misleading Five For Fighting rubric shows that hes lost little of the
cranky ire that he unleashed on American Town, but this time his targets are a
little closer to home. He skews faithless friends and bad habits on the tetchy
opening track “NYC Weather report,” oddly borrowing from both Guns N Roses
“Paradise City,” and Barbara Streisands “People” to hammer his ornery point
home, before training his sights on the human life span, fleeting
relationships, and even Disneyland. But it isnt until “Girlfriends and
Angels,” that he shows his real brilliance, imagination and grit; Ondrasik
finds the exact place where the Beach Boys intersects with the Velvet
Underground and plants himself in that spot, spewing out his own hard won
romantic philosophies, proving once again that the hunter does indeed get
captured by the game. More ribald, sonically inventive, and lyrically edgy,
The Battle For Everything, shows that Ondrasiks combative days may be behind

Album, Non-Classical. When Harrisburg, Pennsylvanias Fuel hit the big time
with its 1998 album, SUNBURN, the group represented a prototypical rock & roll

band striving to insert some real emotional resonance between the radio-ready

Theres a disturbing trend in the Northwest: bands are getting way over-hyped
before their first full-length record (which is often mediocre and
disappointing) even hits the streets. Seattles Harvey Danger, however,
deserved the buzz that their debut CD generated. Where Have All the
Merrymakers Gone? was quite simply one of the best local records released in
1997. It has the pop accessibility of vocalist Sean Nelsons high-register
croon (not unlike Jeremy Enigk), and the energetic and dynamic punch of a
band–guitarist Jeff Lin, bassist Aaron Huffman, and drummer Evan Sult (The
Rockets assistant art director)–that has developed its chops together for
more than four years. Harvey Danger have drawn all the worthwhile elements
from 90s indie rock and created a sound that is at once their own, yet
completely familiar. Lins guitar is full and confident, ranging from full-on
power chords to buzzing melodies, while Huffman frequently takes the leads
with his fat, distorted bass humming away. Sult ably links the two with a
minimum of flash and pretense. Nelsons clear-as-a-bell vocals and sardonic,
clever, and frequently emotional lyrics are both the albums strongest and
weakest aspects. Occasionally his verbosity overcomes the music and his almost
condescending sniping becomes a little tiresome. However, these are minor
complaints in the big picture, because songs like “Carlotta Valdez,” “Flagpole
Sitta,” and “Problems and Bigger Ones” are true gems, and for a first effort,

Holly McNarland has attitude to spare, a tough-as-chain-mail rocker-chick
look, and a strong, powerful voice. Too bad the material fails her on this,
her second album. Wan and uninspired melodies inform most of the self-penned
material, while McNarland overcompensates with earnest, strangled vocalizing
that decimates any subtlety that might have otherwise snuck in. The disc isnt
without its strengths, however. A team of producers, including Warne Livesey
(Matthew Good Band, Midnight Oil) and Mark Howard (the Tragically Hip) add
enough bells and whistles to almost distract attention from the generally
lacklustre tunes. But “Do You Get High” and “Losing My Face,” the two cuts
co-written by former Good Band guitarist Dave Genn, are both dynamic rock
songs with memorable riffs and satisfying choruses. Too often though, Home Is
Where My Feet Are feels as overwrought, and unintentionally silly, as its
