Perhaps unsurprising when one considers they take their name
from the hometown of California’s ’90s desert rock movement,
but Poland’s Palm Desert owe a large sonic debt to Kyuss. In
the Wroc?aw four-piece’s style of riffing, tonality and
propensity for the occasional stoner jam on their third
album, Pearls from the Muddy Hollow (Krauted Mind Records),
they show their allegiance to the desert style and its blend
of fuzzed-up punk and laid back psychedelia. Vocalist
Wojciech Ga?uszka helps change things up, however, with some
elements of Soundgarden-era Chris Cornell to go with periodic
John Garcia gruffness, so that Pearls from the Muddy Hollow’s
nine tracks make a suitable companion piece to Steak’s 2014
full-length debut, Slab City, which basks in a similar
mindset. That’s not to say Palm Desert bring nothing of their
own to the style — both the quick “Rise Above” (not a Black
Flag cover) and extended closer “Forward in the Sun” (8:19)
branch beyond idolatry to an individualized moment — just
that the resounding impression throughout Pearls from the
Muddy Hollow is Kyuss loyalism. Within the style, they do
well in portraying a warm-toned feel and shift smoothly
between movements both inside of and between their songs.
They’re not revolutionary, but Palm Desert do justice to a
familiar sound and sometimes that’s plenty to make for a
quality record. Another decent bit of output from Poland’s
fertile scene.

Since the 2011 release of “Falls of the Wasteland”, Palm
Desert have now come out with another collection of songs
seemingly written in the high deserts crispness of the Mojave
Desert air titled “Rotten Village Sessions”. The 2011 release
was credited, as mentioned above, with a sound similar to the
kings of the high desert, Kyuss, so the anticipation, if not
expectation, for “Rotten Village Sessions” will be ‘can they
do it again’? Or would they even want to do it again. What
will it be like?
As it turns out, Palm Desert stick to the formula, perhaps
working on crafting an even finer collection of stoner rock
tunes than before, something certainly not easy to do,
something not many bands, regardless of location, would want
to attempt, but Palm Desert have not only made the attempt,
they have pulled off another solid collection of songs that
fit perfectly in the pantheon of the high desert stoner sound
perpetuated by Kyuss in the 90s.
Is the music on this album original in style? Does it break
new ground or reveal anything new at all? Perhaps not, at
least not in style or genre, but who the fuck cares? Is it
good stoner rock? No. It’s GREAT stoner rock, and I, for one,
am very appreciative of this foursome from Wraclow, Poland
taking a sound they obviously love, and that I happen to love
as well, and whipping out 9 fresh, healthy versions of a rock
sound that is becoming rare. There is no direct copying of
anything here of which I can tell, just new songs brilliantly
written to a style that is quite rightly one of the best rock
has ever produced, one that came and went in relative
obscurity for most, but luckily not for us.

Within the stoner rock style that Palm Desert employ are
brilliant and gifted vocals, crucial to the high desert sound
as set by John Garcia of Kyuss, eminent and energetic bass,
never simply blended and relegated to the background as so
often happens in many rock bands regardless of style, guitar
that riffs and hooks, solos and scorches with the best of
them, crucial to making memorable, enjoyable melodies, and
drums, like the bass, that powerfully carve out their own
space on these songs, not simply relegated to providing tempo
and beat, but creating wonderful, vibrant music within the
tapestry of Palm Desert’s music.
The opening song, “Down the Odyssey” sets the tone, an eight
minute intercontinental ballistic ride over the tops of
saguaro and joshua, hooking from the outset, both in
memorable melody and powerful blows to your stoner rock
loving head. This is the kind of song you fall right into the
middle of and ride for all its worth.
I love the echoey drum sound on track #3, “Ghulassa Saloon”,
that quickly leads into track #4, “Mani” where the musical
threads here are trippy, catchy, and just plain groovy. It’s
a unique and incredibly enjoyable song that successfully
employs unusual execution in instrumentation.
Palm Desert close out the album with a couple of classic
sounding stoner songs, “Acid Phantom” and “White Wolf”. The
guitar work on “Acid Phantom” is pure and beautiful stoner
rock, enjoyable for its effort as well as its dead on sound.
“White Wolf” is ten minutes of sheer music brilliance, with a
haunting, pitch perfect guitar weaving a tale of wonder and
excitement, building up along the way with ever broadening
drumwork, bass riffs, and vocal intensity. After ten minutes
is a hidden little guitar ditty that adds a dash of flavor.
It is there, I’m sure, just as a little thank you for those
of us that made it to the end and enjoyed the trip along the
way.

Notes:
The success of Small Stone’s first Sucking the 70’s
compilation in 2002 made a sequel almost inevitable,
but the lack of other labels dedicated to new bands
mining this rich old vein of music also made it a
necessity. Who else was going to get it done? So it is
that 2007’s Sucking the 70’s: Back in the Saddle Again
raises the stakes with not one, but two discs crammed
with no less than 31 reinterpretations of timeless
tunes, many of them far from obvious selections.
Among these, standout efforts include Sasquatch’s take
on Grand Funk’s “Are You Ready,” the Brought Low’s
bluesy romp through Big Star’s “Don’t Lie to Me,”
Gideon Smith & the Dixie Damned’s acid trip creep-out
of Donovan’s “Season of the Witch,” and Fireball
Ministry’s impressive swipe at Joe Walsh’s “Turn to
Stone.” Other covers are worthy of attention for re-
imagining the original songs’ arrangements — namely
Halfway to Gone’s heavy metal bitch-slap of Elton
John’s “Honky Cat,” “Dixie Witch,” and Acid King’s
doom-ification of Montrose’s “Rock Candy” and Steve
Miller’s “The Stake,” respectively, and Whitey Morgan &
the Waycross Georgia Farmboys’ country-fried version of
Van Halen’s “Running with the Devil.” Others still
simply boast top-notch performances of acknowledged
classics; for instance, Novadriver’s surprisingly
vicious “Sin City,” Alabama Thunderpussy’s raucous “Man
on the Silver Mountain,” Red Giant’s metallic stab at
“Saturday Night Special,” and Roadsaw’s gutsy treatment
of “When the Levee Breaks.”
Hard rock is hardly the only item on the menu, either,
as witnessed by Puny Human’s Sensational Alex Harvey
Band-based cover of the Osmonds’ “Crazy Horses,” Clutch
and Five Horse Johnson’s collaboration on Funkadelic’s
“Red Hot Mama” (one of two tunes here originating with
George Clinton’s legendary funk crew), Throttlerod’s
stoner rock swipe at Willie Dixon’s blues standard “I
Just Wanna Make Love to You,” Dozer’s amp-distorted
spin on Devo’s “Mongoloid,” and Valis’ lysergic
Frankenstein-ing of Gary Wright’s “Dream Weaver.” And,
if you’re anal about exact dates, there are some ’60s
stragglers to be found on disc two: Los Natas’ part-
Spanish interpretation of Steppenwolf’s “Born to Be
Wild,” Scott Reeder’s daring and slightly botched
attempt at the Beatles’ “Two of Us,” Orange Goblin’s
mega-riffed crunch through the MC5’s “New Rose,” and
the Muggs’ Humble Pie-derived rendering of the
perennial “I Don’t Need No Doctor.” Together with the
remaining tracks not mentioned, the above make up over
two hours of retrofitted hard rock and metal that are
not likely to be challenged or equaled by any other
’70s (and a little ’60s) compilation anytime soon.

Notes:
The band works well together, delivering the punchy
drum & guitar riffs with power while the bassist lays
down a steady foundation of tasty crunch. A lot of the
usual stoner rock sound is there, with some adept
effects thrown on the bass to give it a buzz-saw edge,
but the guitarist balances out the shreddier moments
(which do rock hard) by kicking back every now and then
into a more stripped-down and bluesy mode. They’ve got
a nice range of vocals, with smoother approaches
shifted into rougher fare, and right back out again,
without any of it coming across as forced or beyond the
singers’ abilities.
What the band has put together is a very solid album of
heavy rock, tightly executed but with enough wild
spirit to bring the energy out in earnest. If you’ve
got any fondness for heavy/stoner/desert/doom/whatever
rock (that should be most everyone reading this site),
give these guys your ears.

Notes:
A bluesy riff starts off opener ‘Our Mother Earth’
before the band launches into a barnstormer of a song.
Leaning heavily into heavy rock of the 70’s it’s a
brilliant starter indeed. Going for groove and jam
‘Ocean Deep’ builds up slowly until this psych-sounding
piece kind of explodes in the second half with a brutal
guitar solo. Starting almost like ‘Mississippi Queen’,
‘Equators’ quickly turns into a stoner tune mixed with
a good pinch of power blues of the highest order.
Amazing, you hear?!?!?! It’s back to groove and spaced
out rock on ‘Depth Of The Sun’. Almost like a Clutch
song with John Garcia or Mark Lanegan on vocals
‘Humans’ is that type of song that builds up
increasingly in parts. Slightly different but very
good.
‘With Eyes Wide Open’ takes us on a trip and a half.
Just stick your nose in the rose in the hole and it
smells like a dream if you know what I mean. An awesome
space trip on the slower side so just close your eyes
and you’ll be somewhere else, somewhere good! Knee deep
in blues with blistering guitar work and some heavy
hitting drumming ‘The Drum’ is over too quickly. Remedy
is right around the corner though in ‘Bound To Be
Machines’. Greenleaf play some real good riff-infested
stoner here with Arvid sounding like Mark Lanegan which
is a big plus in my book. Round of the album is the
title track and the Screaming Trees references are here
in abundance and I love it. Musically it’s more spacey
and stoner than the Trees ever were. It’s in the vocal
delivery and the harmonies it comes out and it is
amazing.
Mantra Machine starts early 2012 when guitarist Paul,
bass player Tjo and drummer Jeroen begin to play
experimental jams together in their studio in
Amsterdam.
Influenced by the likes of stoner, spacerock and
psychedelics, Mantra Machine is set out to reach new
audiences with a mix of heavy guitars, shimmering bass
and grooving drums, soaked in ‘mantra style’
instrumental synth soundscapes.
In 2012 they debuted at the Sonic Rock Solstice
festival in England and released their first EP ‘Stage
One’. Among other gigs they were invited to play at
Mudfest III (2013) and shared the stage with a great
line-up of other bands.
In 2014 they have recorded and released a first full-
length album called ‘Nitrogen’.
