Three eclectic and aesthetically diverse albums under
its belt, the four headed beast that goes by the name
of Mesmer has travelled a long way from the sullen
shoegazer vibe of their debut album Sugar Sermon,
released in 2004. Through the blackened clouds of fuzzy
drone and stabbing cries of feedback shine the bright
rays of euphoria in the form of bouncy synth arpeggios
and guitar harmonies sweetened to the point of
bubblegum-naivete.

Nothing is premeditated in the murky world of Mesmer,
where the unexpected is the norm and all things queer
and crooked reign.The new 7″ single Peace in Progress,
is a follow-up to Mesmer’s latest release, The Ghost of
a Tennis Court (2009) unleashed to the general
irritation and dazzlement of the indie rock blogosphere
more occupied with pigeonholing bands and blathering
about microtrends than tuning in and dropping out.

The “blind dog” returns after almost four years and
again rocks the house that the beams crack and the
speakers start to glow. Since 1995 Tobias Nilsson
(vocals/bass) and Joakim Thell (guitars) roam through
the underground and in 1999 the Swedes, together with
Thomas Elenvik (Drums/Hammond Organ), drew attention to
them for the first time with their debut “The Last
Adventures Of Captain Dog” and received mostly positive
feedback for their through and through solid Rock
album. Their partly bluesy Rock reminded of old
veterans like JETHRO TULL, KISS, LED ZEPPELIN and TED
NUGENT as well as newer genre representatives as KYUSS,
CATHEDRAL or the SPIRITUAL BEGGARS. But that was not
enough, Heavy Metal riffs in the style of old METALLICA
also time and again found their way into the songs of
the Scandinavians.
After the label change from People Like You to French
Listenable Records BLIND DOG blow the attack again with
their second effort “Captain Dog Rides Again” and seem
to be wildly determined to get the promotion to the top
flight. Musically that should have been possible with
the debut already, but the tracks of the new output
would really deserve it even more because of their
compactness and variety. The walk on the razor’s edge
between Seventies Rock, Stoner Rock of the 90s and a
few Metal elements is great and at the same time very
entertaining. The songs of “Captain Dog Rides Again”
have been recorded in Berno Studios (THE HAUNTED,
DERANGED), so also in terms of production there is no
room for complaints.
So “Iron Cage”, “Would I Make You Believe” and
“Unsellable” flow from the speakers very powerfully,
while “Follow The Fools” and “Back Off” especially
convince through their calm, almost hypnotizing parts.
No matter how BLIND DOG approach the songs, they almost
always manage to leave a lasting impression. Despite
their progression, the three Northmen have stayed true
to themselves and should satisfy fans of their first
album without any problems and with good promotion also
find enough new listeners. In this condition “Captain
Dog” may saddle his horse many times still and preach
the world of Rock’N’Roll.

New Mexican self-proclaimed rapcore hating label,
Meteor City, kick out a howling heavy CD with Blind
Dog’s debut, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog.
Previous only appearance of Blind Dog was on
Roadrunner’s Burn One Up compilation, a stoner-rock CD.
The label is very competent, and has such acts as The
Atomic Bitchwax (with Monster Magnet’s Ed Mundell),
Goatsnake, Natas and others. Well produced and well
packaged, The Last Adventures of Captain Dog even have
great liner notes – Blind Dog don’t offer lyrics within
the sleeve of the album, however. Instead they offer
their story and history, a well written expose’ that
brings back the days when bands actually had something
to say besides what’s in the songs, including stories
behind the tracks themselves – well done!

Made up of Thomas Elenvik (drums/percussion/Hammond),
Joakim Thell (guitars/harmonica) and Tobias Nilsson
(bass/growly vocals), I was somewhat surprised to find
only three members of this band. Their work sounds very
complete, especially guitars, and it’s easy to see four
or five people contributing to the powerful sound.
Playing together for about a half decade or so now, The
Last Adventures of Captain Dog is as much an anthology
of Blind Dog’s work than it is a debut album, with
songs that are as old as the outfit. You have to
respect a band that waits until the “right time” to put
something out, rehearsing, refining the tracks, instead
of just farting out a quick debut that is nothing but
raw cuts and things that should find their home instead
among the rats of the studio floor.

The CD open with the enormously heavy Thundergroove, a
riff-crushing balls out track of utter carnage. Heavy
enough to crush a freighter, groovy enough to stomp a
pit. Keeping the heavy and loud style, 10,000 Reasons
on track 2 breaks through after Thundergroove picking
up the speed just a bit at the outset but slowing down
to a more grunge-oriented rhythm. I have to give props
to the inclusion of a sample of Merlin from the film
“Excalibur” starting off Blend (track 3). And I love
the opening riff of Beyond My Reach. It has a classic,
rock metal feel to it hearkening back to Led Zep, Pink
Floyd and Jethro Tull. The keyboards you hear in the
back are reminiscent of Steppenwolf, and harmonica adds
a touch of blues, and all of the above show the wide
range of influence that go into a band that are as much
fans of the music as they are players. We can even take
a break with track 8 – Damned If I Should Care is a
ballad that opens with rock-country guitar chords, but
at 2:00 in length it mostly provides a short breather
between heavier tracks. It provides a nice segue into
the next track, Coming To. The album closes just as
heavy as it opened with the closing track Lose, coming
in like a lion and going out with just as strong a
roar.

Only a few months after completing a world tour with
Vista Chino (ex-Kyuss Lives!), Brant Bjork unexpectedly
returned to the stage with some friends under the new
moniker, The Low Desert Punk Band. Even though nobody
expected any new solo material this year, he started
teasing the crowds with several fresh tunes. Then,
without much hype, landed his hardest hitting album
yet, Black Power Flower.

Mixing his trademark cannabis soaked rock ‘n’ rol’e
with copious amounts of hard rock this time, Brant
churned a multitude of chunky riffs and packed them
into one cohesive unit. He always had a penchant for
heavy grooves, but often toned them down with spaced
out jams. However, on Black Power Flower the man cranks
his amps up to eleven and lets the good times roll. His
tenure in Vista Chino must have ambitioned him to add a
whole new layer of distortion to the songs and it works
wonders. Cuts like ‘Stokely Up Now’ and ‘Buddha Time
(Everything Fine)’ are murky monsters that kick harder
than anything on previous records. The fuzzy grooves
are at a crossroad between melodic and dissonant,
whereas screeching solos are wandering all over the
place. ‘Controller Destroyed’ and ‘We Don’t Serve Their
Kind’ share punk influences, boasting some infectious
melodies and some of that cool swag we all love to hear
from the guy. For this album, even the vocal delivery
has been switched from the usual prophetic tone to
shouts. It is a very appropriate move, as the songs ask
for urgency, a feature you wouldn’t correlate with
Brant Bjork.

‘Soldier Of Love’ and ‘That’s A Fact, Jack’ are closer
to the laid back, stoned jams, yet the Low Desert Punks
wrapped them in a layer of fuzz too, turning them into
dirty rockers. Plus, the funky wahs and imposing vocals
work their magic over the rather simple, but downright
catchy chord progressions. The tension breaks towards
the end of the record, where ‘Hustler’s Blues’ and
‘Where You From, Man?’ bring out the hazy side
portrayed best on Jalamanta or Saved By Magic. The
former feels like a night drive through the desert with
its smoky bass lines and guitar licks, before bursting
into an explosive finale. The latter is the soundtrack
to the ride back home, where a main riff is looped for
over eight minutes. It gradually loses steam and Brant
adds only some echoed effects, a few spoken vocals and
solos, leaving enough room for jamming. It will most
probably become a live favorite.

In the end, no matter what trends arise, Brant Bjork is
one of the most comfortable artists and doesn’t wish to
step outside of his universe. In a genre he helped
define and refine over years, he still delivers some of
the most basic and yet compelling riffs all by himself.
Whether you hand him a fuzz pedal and a wall of
cabinets or just an acoustic guitar, the man will never
fail to offer you a slick tune. There are dozens of
acts that thrive on his legacy, still, if you want the
real deal you need to come back to the godfather of
stoner rock. Black Power Flower doesn’t aim to break
boundaries, it just maintains the high standards that
everyone should seek. Roll up a fat one and enjoy.

This is the album where Colour Haze became the band
they are today. Their previous Kyuss-worship was of a
high quality, but probably wouldn’t have carried them
much further than it did.

Periscope has a few halfway-superficial advantages over
its predecessor, Seven, the most immediately obvious
being the number of tracks. Having six tracks (seven if
you include the bonus track “Transmitter”, which you
should) rather than the dozen on Seven, even if the
shortest of them is over six minutes, feels a lot more
manageable and easier to listen to in one go.

The big advantage, though, is that here Colour Haze
sound like Colour Haze. While they still belong to an
obvious stoner/psychedelic rock lineage, they stand out
by, simply, having the best sound. This is meant very
specifically – while you can (and I would, happily)
praise their riffs, or their basslines, or Stefan’s
low-key, unintrusive vocals, or their dedication to
writing actual songs instead of letting their albums
turn into extended, interminable jam sessions, the
thing that gives them an edge is the sound they
cultivate. I doubt many bands spend as much time
refining and obsessing over the actual sounds their
instruments make as these guys do – certainly no others
I’ve heard within the same genres (where quality of
sound is arguably as important as it is in any area of
music) do so as successfully, at least – but the
results are there to see. The guitar tone is fuzzy and
liquid, supported by a deep but never overpowering bass
and a clear drum sound, etc. All balanced together the
outcome is, well, perfect. It’s instantly recognisable
without being quirky or self-conscious. They are a band
who barely even need to be playing notes to sound
fantastic.

Anyway, as an album Periscope is excellent. The opening
“Always Me” pretty much demonstrates everything I
failed to explain very well in the previous paragraph
in its first 40-odd seconds, while “Sun” is probably
the highlight and maybe the best song they had released
til this point. The Hendrix nod in “Periscope (Breit
Return)” is a nice touch, too. It didn’t stay their
best record for very long, but that’s nothing to be
ashamed of – they have an annoying and consistent habit
of getting better with age – and although I imagine
most people won’t be too thrilled to check out
something described with ‘it’s their fourth best
album!’ or something similar, I will still recommend it
cheerfully.

Gutbucket was Born in the north german town of Kiel in
1998. Since then Gutbucket have taken every opportunity
to blast their in-your-face rock from any stage they
could get on to. Shows in the numerous clubs between
Hamburg and Munich or festivals such as the Wacken Open
Air, Wilvarin, Becks Rockspektakel or Jack Daniels Rock
Nights prove that they would go anywhere in the mission
of Rock N Roll.

Several german tours, shows in Switzerland, Austria and
Poland, as well as opening slots for Bands such as
Danko Jones, Rose Tattoo and Saxon plus Shows with like
minded bands as The Awesome Machine, Mannhai, and Smoke
Blow followed in the recent years.

In the summer of 2006 Peter Kaluza was recruited as the
new lead vocalist. His rough voice gives them the touch
of dirt and Rock N Roll that they need.

Gutbucket have contributed to various samplers such as
Armageddon Over Wacken, Metal Hammer Sampler, Burn The
Streets V, All Good Creetins Go to Heaven, A tribute To
The Ramones etc.. Following the Albums Skyrider and
Bullfight Blues, the self titled Gutbucket” is their
third Album.

One of the most successful German D.I.Y.-Bands shifts
up another gear: only shortly after the release of
their first live-DVD on their own label, Janitor
Records, the Berlin-based trio already present their
new studio album: “Rocket boy”. It’s the eleventh
studio album of the German-American band and again
offers Pothead at their best. Maybe a bit darker than
the almost happy, Blues-like predecessor, “Chaudiere”,
“Rocket boy” quickly unfolds the typical flair and
juggles with different styles. “Leg bone”, e.g., with
its almost Doom-like guitars, the title track is
melancholic, thoughtful, the following “Bring” even
goes another step further. The rest of the 14 tracks on
“Rocket boy” feature the typical trademarks. So you
can/must say: everything as it ever was, and yet,
completely new again. Pothead-fans won’t be
dissatisfied, if you want to become acquainted with
their sound for the first time, this album is the
perfect chance so you should better take it –
disappointment impossible!

vehicle-on-vehicle chase, but one psychological. Can
the driver get there in time? Can the mania-inducing
loneliness of the wide expanse be outrun? Soundtrack
for a running reckless in a land where the only visible
things are the dash panel, the headlights, and the
stars.

This is another pretty experimental compilation album.
The funny thing about this album is that it basically
contains 3 demos voor future Queens of the Stone Age
songs (NOVA, AVON and Monster in the Parasol) and it
