If you want to make a mistake at least make it a big one. Things heated up
for Ireland’s much hyped new hope what with 2000s endless excitable press
clippings triumphant festival slots and a full-length chance to prove to the
world if their three-minute slices of searing guitar distress were worth any
of the attention in the first place. Indeed fortune has been strong with this
young trio. The fact that JJ72 sound completely unfazed even when they screw
it all up is what makes this roaringly ambitious debut so captivating. It’s an
idea that has many a Suede and Joy Division name-checks sound apt as proved
by the likes of Snow or Algeria sweltering emotive crackles of indie
guitar thunder that succeed in being as innocent and powerful as any song
influenced by the greats. Truly the magnificence of JJ72 is that they’re on
top form even when they don’t seem to know what they’re doing. Mark Greaney’s
garrulous growls and falsettos soar over far too many syllables. The band’s
softloud Nirvana-isms are occasionally banal. Sometimes it’s only the
band’s wide-eyed eagerness that saves everything. With a lyrical mash-up of
abstract imagery (Short sleeves and warm skinlosing coins calling next of
kin) and glorious bursts of confessional euphoria — somewhere in between the
Sex Pistols and the poems of John Keats — album peaks like Oxygen are
extraordinary. They show how choosing the right blunders can make all the
difference in the world. Because for all its evident talent this debut album
is admittedly a student film with all of its naivete vigor and
self-indulgence. These mistakes are big. These mistakes are personal. Yet
these same mistakes transform JJ72 into a band nothing short of inspiring and
just a touch away from being impossibly beautiful

Released three years after BIRDS OF PRAY Live’s 2006 album SONGS FROM BLACK
MOUNTAIN finds the alternative-rock group staying in the vein of the former
record’s highly melodic sound while revisiting its early-1990s roots. Often

Before anyone had heard a track from WAR PAINT the Black Crowes’ seventh
studio outing it had already kicked up a PR firestorm. Either by deciding to
forego listening to it or by obtaining a leaked download Maxim Magazine
panned the record before they even had an official promotional copy. These
aging neo-hippies found themselves as unlikely defenders of the teetering
music industry by publicly defaming Maxim and demanding an apology. They got
it. Maxim ate er crow. Having taken shots since their debut record for their
unabashed derivative revivalism the Crowes seem to be a band that functions
best when beleaguered. Fortunately WAR PAINT is worth the tussle. After a
decade-plus on the jam band circuit the Robinson brothers return to form
gleefully ripping off the Rolling Stones. The lead-off track Goodbye
Daughters of the Revolution with its swinging beat and raunchy
slide-courtesy of Mississippi All-Star and new Crowe Luther
Dickinson-recalls Let it Bleed.. Oh Josephine echoes the weary
processed guitar tones of Waiting On a Friend. They even ape the Stones
aping Gram Parsons on the beautiful country-tinged number Locust Street
WAR PAINT occasionally finds the band stretching out into a looser more
natural vibe as on Whoa Mule the closer augmented by elements of
freak-folk and reportedly recorded outside the band’s Catskills studio. All
told this is the band’s best album since THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL
COMPANION

GNV FLA is the seventh studio album by Less Than Jake, released
on June 24, 2008. Guitarist Chris Demakes states that the band
“wrote a quintessential Less Than Jake record” and that the album
includes “lots of horns and lots of vocals.”
The albums title is an abbreviation of the bands hometown,
Gainesville, Florida. Corey Apar from Allmusic writes that: “Less
Than Jake have essentially created a bittersweet tribute to their
hometown of Gainesville, sparing no detail in naming the album
GNV FLA, stringing the liner notes together with bleak snapshots
of the city, and littering song names and lyrics with nods to
both the state of Florida and the beloved college town of their
inception.” In the albums liner notes, the band thank the city,
calling it: “the town that inspired the record.”
